Soviet sport badges: fitness, ranks and spartakiads

Sport is the friendliest theme for a collector because its structure is ready-made. Four lines – the GTO fitness programme, rank badges, spartakiads and the Olympic series – cover nearly everything, and each shows plainly when it is complete. Spartakiads are the clearest of all: one tournament yields a whole set of badges by discipline.

Four lines of the sport theme

1. GTO. The Ready for Labour and Defence fitness programme was introduced in 1931, and its badges are the largest part of the theme. They differ by stage and degree, so they are collected by variant rather than by quantity.
2. Rank badges. First, second and third sporting rank – a tiny, very legible run of three badges in one design. The archive shows this set in the badges of 1951.
3. Spartakiads. The summer spartakiads of the peoples of the USSR have been held since 1956, with the winter games forming a line of their own. Each tournament produces a series of badges by discipline – the best way to finish a set.
4. The 1980 Olympics. A separate and the most recognisable series: emblem, mascot and individual sports.

A spartakiad is a ready-made set

The clearest example in the archive is the third winter spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR, 1974. Its badges cover biathlon, alpine skiing, speed skating, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, luge, slalom and figure skating – eight badges in one design plus a general badge for the tournament. Assembled in full the series reads like a poster of the games; a single badge from it says almost nothing on its own.

Telling a rank badge from a souvenir

• The inscription. A rank badge names the rank; a souvenir names an event, a town or a sport.
• Fastening and quality. Rank and award badges were made of heavy alloy with hot enamel and a screw fastening; souvenirs are lighter and usually pinned.
• Repetition. A rank badge exists in a handful of variants, while a souvenir subject repeats in dozens.

What the archive holds

The open archive holds 3,332 Soviet badges, of which the sport theme accounts for 129 items: 53 around the GTO programme, 42 connected with spartakiads, the separate rank run of 1951 and 8 Olympic badges of 1979–1980, including the Olympic bear badge. The densest year of the theme is 1974, thanks to the spartakiad series.

How to collect it

• Start with one spartakiad: the list of disciplines sets a finish line.
• Build the rank run separately – it is three badges, not a theme.
• Sort GTO badges by stage and degree, not by how many you have found.
• Keep the Olympic series apart from the rest: its own design, its own year.
• Keep duplicates for trading – in sport they move fastest.
